Minister’s Thought for the Month

Dear Friends, Birthdays are a long time coming when you're a child, and Christmas is even worse. When you're hoping for a really special present, the time just can't go fast enough until it's yours.

But sometimes – did you ever have this feeling? – when the time actually arrived, there could be an anticlimax. There it was, that magnificent toy: but it had lost something of the magic that it had while it was still only in your head.

It can happen for adults too. We set our hearts on the one thing that will make all the difference for us: that gadget, that holiday, whatever it may be. And when it arrives, that feeling from childhood can creep over us again.

The thing we set our hearts on doesn't change our world in the way we thought it would. “An object that would never justify weariness” – a beautiful phrase (George Eliot, I think) that speaks of just the opposite: of what Christians believe we can find in God.

Yours in His name,
Rev. David Priestnall
